Moscow, June 16 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia and the United States will soon sign an agreement on easing of visa regime, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
“We reaffirm that indeed there is a development of the text of the agreement, the final details are being processed now, and we hope very much that the signing will take place as soon as possible,” the source said.
In May, US Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle stated Russia and the United States will soon agree on three-year multiple entry visas.
During the same month, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and US President Barack Obama had announced plans to liberalise visa restrictions for businessmen and tourists travelling between the two countries. Under the new agreement, eligible business travellers and tourists would be issued visas valid for 36 months at a unified and reciprocal fee.
In March, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had proposed scrapping visa restrictions between the two countries during a meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden in Moscow.
