Russia urges partners to continue fuel aid to North Korea
December 14th, 2008 - 9:26 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Moscow, Dec 13 (RIA Novosti) Russia has called on its partner countries to continue delivering fuel to North Korea as part of the six-party denuclearisation deal.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and chief negotiator to North Korea nuclear talks Alexei Borodavkin said Saturday that his country would continue to adher its committments to Pyongyang and expressed shock over the US statement that the six countires had agreed to stop fuel shipments to the communist country until progress was made to its denuclearisation talks.
“Future fuel shipments will not go forward absent a verification regime,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Friday.
“We hope that all the parties to the talks will comply with the existing agreements,” Borodavkin said, adding that Moscow hoped Pyongyang would respond by phasing out its Yongbyon nuclear complex.
“The statement by the US State Department made following the six-party talks in Beijing surprised us,” Borodavkin said, adding that no such moves had been agreed on with the Russian delegation.
Borodavkin said Russia would ship the third batch of 50,000 tonnes of fuel oil in December, and supply all the 200,000 tonnes in the near future.
