Russia to send team to monitor Japan n-contamination
April 16th, 2011 - 12:35 am ICT by IANSMoscow, April 15 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia will send a scientific team to the Sea of Japan to monitor the levels of nuclear contamination in the area, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday.
The team from the Russian Geographic Society will also examine seismic processes in the region.
“Our specialists will define more precisely what the characteristics of the nuclear contamination in the Sea of Japan are, and they will also conduct environmental and seismic monitoring,” Putin said.
“This is a complex expedition which will run in two stages,” said Artur Chilingarov, President Dmitry Medvedev’s envoy to the Arctic and Antarctica.
The first stage of the expedition will kick off April 22 and last for 24 days. The full expedition would last for about four months, Chilingarov said.
A massive earthquake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan March 11 leaving over 13,000 people dead and 14,000 missing. It also disabled the cooling systems of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
