Russia to prosecute Polish plane crash plunderers
June 8th, 2010 - 7:07 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, June 8 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian investigators Tuesday confirmed that charges had been brought against four servicemen accused of stealing bank cards from a top Polish official who died in the plane crash that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
Russian Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said S.A. Syrov, I.V. Pustovar, A.S. Pankratov and Y.S. Sankov were charged with using the bank cards of Andrzej Przewoznik.
On Sunday, Polish government spokesman Pawel Gras accused the Russian special purpose police unit (OMON) and the interior ministry officers of looting at the site of the crash.
A Soviet-made Tu-154 crashed near Smolensk in western Russia April 10, killing 96 people onboard, including President Kaczynski, his wife and a host of senior Polish officials.
Defence ministry spokesman Aleksei Kuznetsov said the four servicemen had spent 60,345 rubles (about $2,000), which will be returned to Przewoznik’s family.
He said the ministry will make an apology “as soon as the court ascertains the suspects’ guilt”. He added that the servicemen had pleaded guilty.
