Russia, Italy start anti-terror naval drill
November 8th, 2011 - 2:56 am ICT by IANSMoscow, Nov 8 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia and Italy have started a joint naval exercise in the Ionian Sea off Italy’s southeast coast to practice counter-terrorism and anti-piracy operations.
In the drill named “Ionex-2011″ that began Monday, Russia is represented by the Smetlivy patrol ship and the Epron rescue boat from the Black Sea Fleet, while Italy has sent the Espero and the Aviere frigates.
The Smetlivy is carrying a naval infantry unit to take part in the drills.
It would also ensure the ship’s safety during the voyage and visits to foreign ports, said a statement.
