Russia delays new nuclear submarine service
December 3rd, 2011 - 5:29 am ICT by IANSMoscow, Dec 3 (IANS) The Russian Navy has decided not to put into active duty its newest Severodvinsk nuclear submarine until the end of 2012, the Defence Ministry said Friday.
The reasons behind the delay were “low quality of some component parts and the need to conduct more tests of the missiles” carried by the submarine, Xinhua quoted the Sevmash, the only shipyard in Russia producing nuclear submarines, as saying.
The Severodvinsk submarine would spend nearly entire year in the sea for these tests, the military said.
The submarine, launched in June 2010, was originally planned to begin service in 2011.
The construction of the fourth-generation submarine started in December 1993. Russia plans to build up to 10 submarines of this type, which are capable of carrying 24 strategic missiles each, by 2020.
