London, Jan 18 (ANI): A gritty 14-man British-Irish rowing crew, led by a Scottish adventurer, has set a new record for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, after landing at Barbardos in 33 days, 7 hours and 30 minutes after they left the Canary Islands.
Leven Brown, 35, of Edinburgh, fronted the La Mondiale crew, which landed in Port St Charles, Barbados at 8.40pm GMT on Jan 17, reports the Scotsman.
During the 4,800-kilometer (3,000-mile) crossing, La Mondiale also became the first ocean rowing boat to travel more than 160 kilometers (100 miles) per day for nine consecutive days, according to the Ocean Rowing Society International.
They beat the previous record by more than two days that had been set by the same French rowboat in 1992.
Brown, who claims to be a descendent of Christopher Columbus, already holds the record for rowing solo across the Atlantic, taking 123 days to cover the distance between 2005 and 2006.
Brown’s partner Yvette Jelfs, 41, from Staunton-on-Wye, Herefordshire, said the crew had put “everything” into the record and now they were going to celebrate.
“I can’t believe that they’ve actually managed it,” she said. (ANI)
