Rooney to benefit from Ronaldo’s exit

Alex Ferguson London, June 13 (IANS) England striker Wayne Rooney will benefit the most following Manchester United’s decision to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world-record fee.
Ronaldo’s departure will see Rooney getting back his favourite role as an orthodox striker, rather than out wide, the Mirror reported Saturday.

Rooney has struggled to suppress his dislike at being shunted out wide by United manager Alex Ferguson, but he has always remained committed to play wherever selected.

Ronaldo was United’s lone striker last season in big games, but now after he departs, Rooney can look forward to get back his favourite role.

“The position I play for England is the one I most like to play in. I’ve not played that for a while at United,” Rooney was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“It’s the manager’s choice but I have always said that my best position is up front. When you’re playing out on the left you have responsibilities in terms of defending.

“That does take some of your energy away when you’re attacking. With England you don’t have to get back so much. It’s a team game and I love playing for the team, but maybe I have to try to be more selfish in where I want to play and what role I want to play,” he said.

With Carlos Tevez in all likelihood heading across town to Manchester City, Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov will be United’s first-choice strike partnership.
