Rock singer’s strip-tease for Ibrahim upsets Malaysian crowd

Kuala Lumpur, July 7 (IANS) A rock singer’s support for beleaguered opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim went awry when he stripped to show off his boxer shorts during a performance. Half-way through the performance, the lead singer of the band Carburettor Dung showed his back to the audience, lowered his trouser and showed off his short.

He was abused and hit with bottles by the crowd. He and his band members had to be led away to safety, The Star said Monday.

The rally was organized by Ibrahim’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to shore up support for him and to lambast the government for hiking fuel prices last month.

The anti-climax came even as Ibrahim challenged Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to a discussion on how to meet the energy crisis claiming that, unlike the government, he had a ready solution.

Prior to his strip performance, the singer was singing a song that included lyrics poking fun at the sodomy allegations against Ibrahim, levelled by an aide last month, pushing him into the eye of a political storm.

The Sunday evening crowd was not amused. They shouted at him and threw bottles. The organizers rushed in to restore calm, but took a long while before they succeeded.

A member of the audience, who did not want to be named, described the act as inappropriate as there were children present at the event, the newspaper said.

Another man, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said it was very unprofessional of the singer, adding that he was very upset because many VIPs were present.

The media reports did not say whether Ibrahim was present and had any reaction to the episode.

As the situation came under control, event coordinator Hishamuddin Rais came out to apologise for the incident.

Malaysian audiences at public performances tend to be conservative and men and women are at times seated separately.

Another rock singer who took off his shirt and threw it at the cheering crowds some weeks ago had to apologise after the government took a dim view of it and threatened to bar him from performing in public.
