Rock concert drummers are as fit as the fittest footballersJuly 22nd, 2008 - 1:07 pm ICT by ANI
London, July 22 (ANI): Drumming in a rock concert puts the performer through the same gruelling exercise as a Champions League footballer during a match, says new study, which concludes that rock drummers are as fit as soccer players.
The eight-year study involving Blondie’’s Clem Burke, 52, found that drumming over 90 minutes lifted his heart rate to the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo’’s in a league game.
Clem burned between 400 and 600 calories an hour and his heartbeat peaked at 190 a minute.
Footballers find playing a Champions League game once every two weeks a drain, but these guys do it every day on tour, The Sun quoted Dr Marcus Smith, as saying.
Dr Smith, of the University of Chichester, said: Musicians need exceptional stamina. Footballers can expect to play 40 to 50 games a year.
But in one 12-month period Clem played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts.
Dr Smith hopes the findings can be used in the fight against childhood obesity. (ANI)
