Riots Break Out In Athens Over New Taxes

Athens riotAthens, May 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The devaluation of the euro against the dollar is leading to a great deal of contention in Greece, with riots getting worse with every passing day. Recent reports suggest that the situation is getting even worse, with reports emerging of a major riot that broke out in Athens, the capital city on Wednesday. The riot, it has been reported, resulted in the death of three people, the identities of whom have not been released by the police. The gravity of the situation can be deemed well from the fact that the Parliament itself came under the siege of the rioters. The riots were part of the nationwide protests that are taking place in the country.

The riots are taking place as a protest against the new measures that the Greek government has undertaken in order to ensure a stop to the further devaluation of the Euro against the dollar. The Greek government has imposed a new range of taxes and spending cuts on the people, which led to widespread dissatisfaction among the people. The riots that took place in Athens on Wednesday took the shape of widespread violence. The bodies of the people who were killed in the riots were discovered in a branch of the Marfin Bank.

The protesters set fore to the Marfin Bank and threw Molotov cocktails at the policemen trying to control the mob. The police resorted to he use of tear gas, and several were set on fire, even as the mob hurled paving stones at them. A fire truck and some cars were also set on fore, along with two buildings. Barricades built of the burning vehicles were set up.
