KABUL (BNO NEWS) — A top leader of the Pakistani Taliban was reportedly killed in a clash with Afghan forces on Wednesday, according to local media reports on Thursday.

Geo News Television reported that Maulvi Fazlullah, the head of a Taliban faction in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, was killed along with six others in the Barg Matal district of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province. The channel cited Mohammad Zaman Mamozai, the chief of the Afghan border force.

“Maulvi Fazlullah was killed in direct clash with Afghan border police…last night,” he said. The Afghan Taliban reportedly confirmed the fighting, according to Geo News, but said no foreign militants were involved.

A police official also confirmed Fazlullah’s death to the Chinese Xinhua news agency. “Mawlana Fazul Rahman was killed during a clash with police in Barg-e-Matal district on Wednesday,” the official said, without providing more details.

BNO News was not immediately able to independently confirm Fazlullah’s death. The Afghan Interior Ministry was not immediately able to comment on the reports.
