Record 205 nominees for 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
February 27th, 2009 - 8:51 pm ICT by IANSOslo, Feb 27 (DPA) A record number of nominations, in all 205, have been made for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Institute said Friday.
The tally includes 172 individuals and 33 organisations, besting the 2005 number of 199 nominations.
Public broadcaster NRK reported that US President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were among the nominees.
The nomination number was released a day after the five-member Nobel committee held its first session. Two of the members, including Norwegian parliament Speaker Thorbjorn Jagland who heads the committee, were new elects.
Jagland, a Social Democrat, has also held the posts of prime minister and foreign minister. Last year he said he was leaving Norwegian politics.
The 2008 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari who was recognised for mediating in a number of international conflicts.
The Norwegian Nobel Institute was set up in 1904 to aid the Nobel Committee to vet candidates. The Nobel Committee advises nominators not to announce their proposals. However, there are no rules against the procedure allowing plenty of speculation before the announcement, normally in mid-October.
Among names mentioned in recent years are former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, Israeli nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, as well as the Austrian-based relief organization SOS Children’s Villages and the European Union.
Among those who have the right to nominate candidates for the coveted award are parliamentarians, academics, former peace prize laureates as well as current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
The Peace Prize is one of the prizes endowed by Swedish industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel.

I am proud to be an American.
I am even kind of proud that we have had an African American president. Although I believe too much is being made of it.
I will stand behind our president, in this case, hoping that those who carried him into office saw more than I did in his unsubstantiated campaign promises.
But, I certainly felt that the Nobel Committee was more clear minded. Out of 205 nominees there wasn’t someone who “actually” did something for peace? Someone who is not getting by on “articulation,” “aspiration,” and “attitute?”

I just now found out that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it turned me sick to my stomach. actually did. What has he done for peace?? He has only backstabbed American’s and promised who knows what to every foreign country’s leader in exchange for who knows what somewhere down the line. I don’t call those few trips he has made over seas peace talks. War talks maybe. He should bow down and lick the dust from President GW BUsh’s shoes. Now people that voted for Obama are seeing that President Bush did all that he could possibly do to end the crisis in Iraq and bring our boys home. Obama made that his first promise., his first action when he got into the white house, and he has done nothing. Why, because he see’s now that he is not all powerful and has gotten a taste of what is involved in all that. He still speaks of nothing that he knows anything about. He has no experience in anything. Makes no difference to me, his skin color, i just wanted someone in office who knew something. Obama is clueless and he could care less for America. You will never see his birth certificate because the devil himself can dodge every obstacle and scheme his way out of every hard place. and folks, if Obama is not the anti-christ, he is the makings of the anti-christ’s lead man to open up the way. Read your bible. All the world wonders after the man of peace. the world being all the countries outside of the U.S., and that is who Obama is out to please. Even people that voted for him, don’t believe he deserved the peace prize award. Ask them., this is all the devils work for the devils advocate.

Greg Mortenson should have gotten the Nobel Prize! Because he actually worked for ‘peace’ and improved America’s reputation in South Asia!

I voted for Barack Obama because I could see the destructive path that the Republican party was leading us down. I have always found it very strange that a country such as ours that was founded by peace loving men has ended up being the world’s biggest bully. One of these days, the American people will pull their heads out and realize that we cannot solve any of our problems by dropping bombs on the rest of humanity. The rest of the world doesn’t revolve around the United States. I have seen war close-up and it is not a pretty sight. I can assure everyone that a vast majority of those who seek war with our world neighbors have never seen war and have never served in the military. I was somewhat surprised to find out that the president had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, but I am glad that he was. Perhaps it will give him the needed incentive to make further strides for world peace. If we will look back at the former recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, we will find that most were not awarded the prize for what they had done, but rather what they had attempted to do. The last three Americans to receive the Nobel Peace Prize were Democrats. Perhaps soon the Nobel committee can add an “ignorance” category and we can start giving the prize to some well-deserved Republicans. And finally, in response to Ms. Peave, there is no such thing as the “Anti-Christ”. David Rudolph, US Marine Corps, Viet Nam, 1967-68.
October 10th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Well, Mr. Rudoph., no sense arguing with ignorant people. I there is no such thing as an Anti-Christ, then you must be an aetheist. For one that believes in a sovereign almighty God, that our forefathers based this country upon, Jehovah God, the only one and true God whose Son is Jesus Christ, if they believe on Him, then they have to believe in the soon to come anti-christ, else neither is true. And, if you are so inclined read the Holy Bible, especially Revelations, it may surprise you to see how much has come to pass that was written so many thousands of years ago. But, you will regretfully realize one day when all comes to full fruition that you said those words. I suppose ignorance is bliss.
Far as Obama, he would do well to lick the shoes that George Bush walks in, for now, i suspect Obama has realized that the war in Iraq is more complicated than he first thought. He can’t bring our troops home either. Why?? Because he now knows it is still a mess over there. As the old saying goes, “don’t judge me until you have walked in my shoes”. That is what Obama has found out now, why else is he sending more of men and women over there?? He spoke and made promises to America that in his ignorance he swore to keep. Those of us who have our heads out of the sand knew he was just one big charismatic flip flop who knows nothing of war.I am neither for any party, only for the man who can do the job and serve our nation well and who has moral ethics and family values. Obama has no family values. If he did, he would not endorse abortion nor the homosexual agenda. He is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Get your head out of the sand sir. I admire a man such as Georg W. Bush who at least was not ashamed to admit he was a Christian, and sometimes war is what we have to do. If he hadn’t tried to do something, then you would all be calling him a coward. So., you can’t have it both ways. I admit, it has been too long a stay over there, but it was not all Bush’s fault, no way. If obama were such a good peace maker, then why does he not show good will and charity(love) at home in America first. He berated Bush so much in his flare and stardom acting speeches he gave. Yet, Bush has not chosen to give back evil for evil. That takes a man to hold back and realize you have a pure idiot in the White House that knows nothing, never has had enough experience. Only by the Grace of almighty God is Obama in the whitehouse in the first place, and if God allowed him to be there it was for a divine purpose to fullfill the scriptures., but that doesn’t mean that i have to like the evil minded man, nor does it mean that God made him the evil self centered man that he is., only that he is the one that has come down the pipes. I would be happy to find out one day that i am wrong about obama and his sham of a family life he portrays. Michelle Obama using the most expensive form of travel just to go buy shoes. How hypocritial is that?? There are great democrats and there are great republicans., i don’t judge a person by their political party, only for what they stand for. You can be called a Peacemaker and be a Murderer at the same time., Not for the Iraq war, i am speaking of all the innocent blood that has been shed in our nation way too long. Bush at least did what he could to stop it, but his powers are limited as well, but he did not let partial birth abortion continue., Obama loves it. He is a sick sick man. If he is not the anti-christ, he is close enough and is paving the way. Just wait and read and listen, …..I will pray for your blinded eyes to be opened., as well for the rest of the county, but i kinda see that most people are coming to grips with the fact we have a President who can’t even prove his citizenship as an American, so….that says a lot. Stupid can’t fix stupid.
October 11th, 2009 at 3:57 am
Dear Kay Peave,
Thank you, Thank you, for putting into words what I am too steamed up about to articulate so well. You did it so beautifully. I can not believe that people are so blinded by this man. His take on abortion is sickening. I believe his intentions for our country are far from pure. If he is not the anti-christ, he was sent to set the way for one. I have no problem with the color of Obama’s skin, it is the color of his soul that scares me.
October 11th, 2009 at 6:36 am
Dear Kay Peave,
Thank you, Thank you, for making the rest of us see why Obama is so important for your country. Your opinions and way of thinking is what’s wrong with America. God is mercyful, God is good, may he forgive your ignorant soul, for you (and all others like you) do not know better. I will pray for you.
October 11th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Lisa Hinojosa and Kay Peave - you are exactly what is wrong in the world today. For people who say they have “God” in their hearts, you sure have the devil in your mouths. Open your eyes to a world outside your borders and see what is really happening. Being an American, especially a Christian American is a perfect example of your anti-christ. And p.s. Obama is not a Muslim!
October 11th, 2009 at 10:08 am
To Lisa Hinojosa: Thank you, i am glad to see someone of a kindred spirit. Yes you are so right…and it really made me sick to my stomach, physically, when i heard how he was once again “glorified” with the peace award. That was just the straw that broke my back, lol. I love the way you worded that last sentence, that is what i would have liked to have said as well.
October 11th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
The transformation will soon be completed. Welcome, comrades, to the new U.S.A.S. (Union of Socialist American States). I’ll see you in the bread line later.
October 12th, 2009 at 3:46 am
If what is wrong with America is independent thought and the fact the God helps those who help themselves, then I guess Lori is right. I do have God in my heart, that’s why I know what happened on 9-11 was evil and that evil needs to be stopped. I also know allowing women to have late term abortions is nothing but legalized murder. Whether or not Obama is a Muslim isn’t the issue, it’s that he does not love or have pride in America the way a President should.
Joe: LOL–too funny. if not the bread line, I guess the health care line. :)
October 12th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Well said Lisa, you really hit the nail on the head., and JoeZ”s statement is on the money too. I really believe that what we said does not go well with some because, as my daddy always said:
“Some people get mad only because “the truth hurts”. ..and he was so right, lol.
The christians in America have always been looked to as people who are to shut their mouths and never speak up. Well, the time has come in our land that we must speak up in defense of our Christian heritage. The muslims, hindu’s, etc., are to be screened from any negative reply of their so called god or religion. The gay and lesbians can go to the White House, as they are presently doing, to demand their sickening rights to be equal in the marriage laws, etc-Ever how you want to say it.
While in the past christians who have protested the homosexual agenda just by silently holding up posters in protest, were hauled off to jail. This morning on the radio, i as so apalled to hear , once again, Obama’s loud and prideful voice cheering them all on in their protest. He acts like he is a god of sorts, he promises all things to everyone. BUt i would like to see him make the christians in this land some promises–course that would not be politicly correct since we, and all caucasion people have now found themselves the minority in this land. Free speech is not one of our freedoms to enjoy anymore. My reply to those that say we Christians are to be meek and lowly…”i am a CHRISTIAN, not a doormat!!!!.” Thank you very much!
October 12th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Lisa and Kay, just to be up front, I am an atheist. But I do see a necessity for what has been described as Christian moral principles to be the basis of a successful society. I think the founding fathers also took that into account, and it can be found that many if not most of them were not devout believers in a God.
Obama presents himself as a Christian, but hides the fact that he is more accurately described as a Socialist, or perhaps a Fascist.
I think government should play a minor role in the daily lives of the people, only involving itself where it is absolutely necessary, protecting the borders, apprehending criminals, maintaining the infrastructure, etc. The power should be least at the highest level of government, and strongest at the local level. People will take care of other people who are in need, but there should be limits and only those who are directly aware of the situation are best prepared to make appropriate decisions, not a centralized government.
Everyone has a right to believe as they wish, and that should not be used as a wedge to divide us. Politically I tend to side with the Christians, although I remain an atheist.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Hi JoeZ, thank you for your honesty. I truly enjoyed reading your post. You really pegged it correctly. I truly have had that same feeling about Obama being more like the socialists, etc. as well. The health care bill he proposes grabs people that have no insurance like a person at deaths door being given a chance to take a miracle working drug and then live….they want to flock to it., without thinking how they may pay for it in the end later and not knowing to what extent. It truly does not feel right to me. I felt that government will be into so much of our personal lives and get more control as time goes on. Just like you so eloquently put it.
In a college polictical science class years ago., i recall our professor reading some of the writings from our forefathers, and they said exactly what you are saying. Also, stated that america should stay out of foreign wars and politics except to the extent that our own borders and safety were at risk. I believe we had to try and respond to 911, and look for the terroists, but now it has just been sooo long., till we have gotten so dug in over there. Yet, i understand that is a hard place to decide what to do. However, getting back to the points you made.,i just find that you truly have a true heart of love and compassion for our country and other americans., truly, it doesn’t take a “christian” to feel that way. I believe in one omnipotent Jehovah, Yahwey God the Father of all mankind, yet that does not mean that those that do not believe are void of a heart. Thank you for being that voice that shows we all are citizens of this vast country and tho we may be different as night and day in some ways as well as our bleifs, ., we still believe in what our forefathers stood for, truth, honor, dignity, love for country and our fellow man. I thank you for your plain ole common sense too. More of those in the white house need a good ole dose of that, lol. I hope to read more of your posting again.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:47 am
Obama might not be the anti christ, but he is on the devil’s speed dial for sure
October 14th, 2009 at 1:30 am
Amen “hope& change”…Amen!!! lol i like that catch phrase.,well done!!
October 14th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I am so shocked that people are arguing over the Obama peace prize thing. He won - cant change it now. He shouldnt have (he hasnt done anything to deserve it) wont it… but oh well. As for the country going down the drain, yes it is. I cant help but apply for citizenship in canada. This country was great - for a long time. but no longer.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I think the likes of Kay Peave etc are just hypocrites who do not take any action about what they believe in, but wait to see what others do and then criticise. If Obama makes you sick to the stomach and you believe he is the anti-christ, why did you not do anything about it before he was elected as President? Personally I dont agree with everything he says or does, I do not support abortion or homosexuality. but i think what Obama stands for is commendable, something that most of you Americans (president or not) were not able to do.Be the change that you want to see. Begin with your children, teach them Christian values, take them to church, do a little each day to change the liberalism/democracy and not theocracy that has crept upon the United States and pray to God that He guides us and leads us in everything that we do. If Obama is the anti-christ or so associated with him, I pray that the Lord will forgive the Americans for putting him into power and all of us as the rest of the world for supporting him. If he is not and his reasons and causes are just, for it is the Lord who can only know a person’s heart, I pray that the Lord will help him utilise the Nobel Peace Prize that he has won for the good, love and peace of firstly America (charity begins at home) and for the rest of the world.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
“Observer”…everything you have
said about Obama is no different that what i or others have said., and none of us said that Obams “was or is” the anti-christ, merely a possiblility or just a comparison. Basically, as far as being a hypocrit because i as one person could not stop Obama from being elected., what pray tell, did you do to stop it.?? I have shared with people who were Obama voters my reasons, which were mainly what you stated about marriage, homosesuality, abortion…those are the first criteria a person has to meetsince those are the main things we can know about a person hoping to win our votes. Everything else kinda lurks in the shadow. Who knows what they are really gonna do once in office. But, i can assure you, i have done all else that you spoke of far as teaching my children and others about Christ and his statutes. I do know that we are told to pray for whoever has the rule over us in our government., and yes i do for if there is a chance Obama’s heart can change i surely pray it does. All that you say about that is true and accurate, i agree with you 100%.
So when you say i am , and others like me, are hypocrites, then, i don’t see much, from your writing that elimanates you from being one as well. And, you contradicted yourself when you said you commend what Obama stands for. Personally, i see nothing he has done to this day that inspires me in any kind of way. I will continue to pray for him and his family tho as i am directed to by God’s word. Yet that doesn’t mean i approve of his lifestyle nor the negative lifestyle he is trying to push down this nations throat, nor is he of a character that our children need to look up to. That is really sad. Used to be that a President was a person a child could look up to., but woe to our nation that that has not been the case in a long time.
So, yes let us be the change we want to see., and that means for me to voice my opinions and my values, when given the opportunity. And not to vote for any person who does not hold to Christian values and morality issues both on a local government level and Nationwide level. So, somehow, i don’t think you actually comphrehended what you read that i wrote. Unlike Obama, i believe we must all not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Thank you for your response tho, as i know that is one of our freedoms. Freedom of speech, so far anyway. May God help us all thru these dark hours., adn to know that when all is said and done, God is who we ultimately have to put our trust and faith in.
October 21st, 2009 at 7:51 am
wow my personal oppinion is he is the anti chirst i’m a 16 year old girl and my dad is a pastor.i have studied the Bible adn all the signs are there that he is the anti-chrict.and another thing we are not hypocrites,no body is perfect and wedo not look down on people who are not perfect cause we our selves are not but it doesnt make us hypocrites it makes us HUMAN and personally i hope he is the anti christ so i can be in my home in heaven with my God.and i pray that who ever may read this will change there lifes and walk with the lord.
October 21st, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Well, Bill Maher seems to think that Americans are stupid, and perhaps he is right considering that Obama was elected President. Of course I don’t think things would be that much different or better had John McCain been elected. We, the people have allowed the Democrat and Republican parties to dominate politics providing us with a choice of the Liberal Left or the Liberal Right in control of our government.
We need to stop voting based on what a candidate promises to provide us and begin to demand that the candidates we will support will in turn listen and support us, their constituents, once in office, and not their political party.
We have a Constitution, and for a long time now our elected representatives have blatantly circumvented it. Yes, it’s time for change, but not the change that is going on at the moment. The so called progressives would like to see us regress back to a tightly controlled society like when people were ruled by Kings, and Lords, deciding what freedoms should be granted to individuals, and even how and what we should be allowed to think. Is a majority of American citizens ready to allow that to happen?
November 20th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Dear Kay Peave,
You are amongst the people that create problems and conflicts on earth by mixing your religious beliefs with your politics and forcing them upon others.
History proves that we should definitely stop mixing religion and politic.
For many many years, USA has welcomed immigrants from around the world no matter the race, ethnicity and religion.
The world has changed Ms Peave and America is a melting pot made of people from different cultures and beliefs.
So if you are the Christian that you pretend to be then you must know that Jesus did separated Politic from the Church when he said:
“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”
November 21st, 2009 at 12:39 am
I am so sorry Johnny Boy, but apparently you have never taken political science in college or high school, or read up on our fore fathers who included Christianity in every thing they thought about this country. Yes , we do have freedom of religion, but it is not good when Christianity upon which this USA was built upon, should be looked upon as a doormat for other nationalites and religions to spit upon. When people come here, they should not be allowed to become a citizen unless they can fluently speak and write English, and they should not expect our government to cater to their religious beliefs over the Christian’s. That is what i am talking about. So., if you read what i wrote above at the beginning, you will see that Christianity and politics were always linked hand in hand and our nation was much better for it. You, like most people have taken one verse of the Holy Bible and taken it out of context to suit your agenda. If you had read the whole chapter., you would know that Jesus was talking about paying taxes., as well as for paying/giving/tithing to the work of the Lord. Jesus merely sat an example, as Paul also writes as well that we as christians should do that that the government requires of us., but not to refrain from giving to the church. Jesus was not ani-politic…He just wanted people to not be hypocritical. A politician that is a true Christian cannot separate the two., one must rightly divide things. Example: Obama cannot call himself a christian and still do nothing to stop abortion and partial birth abortion. True, a president cannot begin or stop all things., but they can voice that they are against certain things. Obama has always been for abortion and gay rights. And, as far as a melting pot., of course it always has been. Rightly so., but it is sad when non-citizens can demand to have the full rights of American citizens without having to pay the price., and our government is foolish enough to even give it a second thought. That is what i am talking about Johnny Boy. And i would, if i were you, read my scriptures , whole chapters, and not just pull one out of the hat to further your agenda. That would help , if so many people would do that. Those who do not want to admit, or is ashamed, to admit that our Nation was based on Christian morals and values, then they should leave or just not come here. We should never pay tribute to any other religion. Getting away from Christian morals is exactly what is wrong with our government and politicians now. okay., i am done.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:42 am
Joez., i agree with you., you are exactly correct. Wish i could sum up things that efficiently.,haha. But you said it very plain and well. Thankyou.!!!
January 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 am
Greg Mortenson should have won this prize; he deserves it far more than Obama!
