Rebel commander captured in Philippines
September 23rd, 2009 - 8:31 am ICT by IANSCotabato (Philippines), Sep 23 (Xinhua) A rebel commander, who carried a $25-million bounty, was captured by the security forces in southern Philippines, the military said Wednesday.
Camarudin Hadji Ali, commander of the banned Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), was captured during a raid Tuesday in Cotabato city. The group was responsible for a deadly attack last year in which 60 people were killed, military spokesman Major Randolph Cabangbang said.
Cabangbang said Camarudin did not resist arrest when he saw the troops cordoned off his hideout.
The MILF is believed to have more than 11,000 combatants.
Peace talks between the government and the group resumed recently after it collapsed in August last year, when the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a separate homeland for the Muslim rebels, prompting the MILF to launch daily attacks on Christians in the Mindanao region.
A peace pact between the two sides will end a four-decade long insurgency in the country that killed more than 120,000 people.
