New York City, April 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pest control officials in New York City have warned that cutting funds to the program would only harm the city’s tourism. Officials are demanding that the state should restore $1.5 million that has been cut from the budget.

The president of Manhattan Borough, Scott Stringer, said tourists would not be interested in visiting a rat infested city. Stringer explained that the cuts have already resulted in the loss of work to about 57 workers. The layoffs have also caused the number of rat complaints to go up by 1.5 percent.

Stringer also highlighted other problems that rats could pose for the city. He explained that the rodents are dangerous to the health of children and the city’s quality of life. He was shocked that the city was ready to make cuts on a program that was bringing in money.

Stringer asked that, “Why would you make cuts to a program that actually makes money for the city?”

The New York City pest control collects a total of $6million in fines from property owners every year.

A spokeswoman of the city told reporters that Stringer has no case. She explained that, “Our new approach has allowed us to become better at discovering rat problems, better at notifying landlords about infestations and better at getting properties near each other to treat rat problems simultaneously.”
