Agartala, April 27 (IANS) Militants of the separatist National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) have gunned down a railway worker and kidnapped an engineer in the state, police said Sunday. A police spokesman said NLFT guerrillas abducted engineer Debabrata Das, 42, and shot dead head mason Birendra Debnath, 56, at the Ataramura hill ranges, 40 km north of here, late Saturday.
The engineer, who hails from Hailakandi in southern Assam, was supervising railway construction. The North-East Frontier Railway is laying a new track to connect Agartala by June.
Police and paramilitary troops have launched a combing operation to nab the militants and rescue the engineer.
Eight NLFT militants, meanwhile, surrendered to the Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur in north Tripura Sunday.
