Radiation risk from Japan nuke plant ‘considerably smaller’: Official

Tokyo, Apr 11 (ANI): Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano has said the risk of massive radiation leaks from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is lower than what it was at the start of the crisis.

‘The risk that the situation will worsen and that there would be new massive emissions of radioactive materials is becoming considerably smaller,’ The Kyodo quoted Edano, as saying.

Edano said the government sees the current evacuation order for those within 20 kilometers of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station as appropriate.

Regarding possibility of expanding the evacuation area, he said the government is discussing it with local governments in consideration of radiation risks.

Another factor being considered is the cumulative amount of radiation over a long period of time, Edano added.

He also said there is ‘no final decision’ about plans to make the 20 kilometer radius a legally binding off-limits zone. Some residents have returned to the area at their own risk to collect belongings. (ANI)
