Racism in Australia gets similar to United States’ Deep South: Johnny Lee Clary
March 15th, 2011 - 6:52 pm ICT by ANIWashington. Mar.15 (ANI): A former Ku Klux Klan leader has said that racism in Australia has reached a similar intensity to what he saw in the United States’ Deep South.
Johnny Lee Clary, a former KKK leader, said that prejudice and hatred Down Under ran deeper than most people cared to admit.
“I’ve been coming to Australia for 12 years and I see just as much racism here as I have in America. A lot of people in Australia like to pretend that it doesn’t exist but it does,” The Telegraph quoted him as saying.
Ku Klux Klan is the name of three distinct organizations in the United States, which have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supermacy, whitenationalism and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism.
Earlier Clary was the leader of KKK, but he left the organization and became a church minister.
Presently, Clary is in Port Stephens to speak to school children about his life and how he came to realize that racism and prejudice are wrong.
His statement sheds light on the increasing racism in Australia. The recent acts of racism against Indians in Australia have resulted protests in both the nations. (ANI)
