A moderate earthquake magnitude 5.0 Richter scale hit in New Ireland,Papua New Guinea on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 23:24:43 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time ) and Friday, October 17, 2008 at 06:24:43 AM at epicenter local time as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter is 135 km (85 miles) SSW of Kavieng, New Ireland, PNG, 200 km (125 miles) WNW of Rabaul, New Britain, PNG, 725 km (450 miles) NNE of PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea, 2640 km (1640 miles) N of BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia with the depth of 35 km (21.7 miles) set by location program and location 3.736°S, 150.430°E.
