Putting kids to bed ‘is the most stressful task for parents’
April 7th, 2011 - 1:58 pm ICT by ANILondon, April 07 (ANI): A study by Munch Bunch children’s books has found that putting children to bed is the most stressful task for modern-day UK parents.
According to 36 per cent of mothers and fathers, getting wilful youngsters to stop watching TV or playing computer games is tougher than the daily commute or dealing with a demanding boss, reports the Daily Express.
The traditional bedtime story is dying out and one in five desperate parents admits resorting to bribery to get children to bed.
While 17 per cent of youngsters are pacified with the promise of a later weekend bedtime, 28 per cent are allowed to watch TV “a little longer”. Six per cent are even given sweets.
On average, it takes British parents 23 minutes to get their child to go to bed. A quarter of children take more than 30 minutes to settle down.
One in 40 stressed mums and dads spend more than an hour putting their child to bed. Children up to the age of 10 spend 1hr 17mins watching TV before going to bed.
A worn-out 44 per cent of mums and dads say they are too tired or busy to read their child a bedtime story and 28 per cent have never read one. More than a quarter of parents describe bedtime as a “constant battle” and nine per cent say it is “extremely stressful”. More than a quarter of parents even fear that their child gets up again to watch TV in their room or play computer games. (ANI)
