Public criticism of Queen after Di’s death ‘hugely upset’ Queen Mother
September 27th, 2009 - 2:35 pm ICT by ANILondon, September 27 (ANI): Queen Mother was angry and defensive after her daughter, the Queen, was criticized by the public for her actions after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in a car accident in 1997, it has emerged.
The Queen’s apparent “business-as-usual” approach to take Princes William and Harry to church at Balmoral just hours after Prince Charles had told them of their mother’s death had made the public angry.
Lady Angela Oswald who was the matriarch’s ladies in waiting for 21 years from 1981 revealed that the Queen Mother was disheartened with people’s response to her daughter’s prudence.
“The Queen was criticised for two things. One was taking the boys [Princes William and Harry] to church [on the day the Princess died]. But they wanted to go to church. If you are a Christian and your mother has been killed, it is a comfort going to church,” the Telegraph quoted Lady Angela as saying.
“The other thing was that people expected the Queen to abandon her two grandsons - whose mother had just been killed - and go to London to mourn with people who had never even met the Princess.
“If you stand back and think about it, it is an extraordinarily selfish attitude. Queen Elizabeth was hugely upset by the criticism of her daughter because she has always admired her so much. It was such a cruel criticism and it was unfair,” she added.
The statement comes following the publication of William Shawcross’s official biography of Queen Elizabeth. (ANI)
