Prince William to patrol Caribbean drug lords with Royal Navy

London, June 1 (ANI): Britains Prince William is to patrol for drug smugglers in Caribbean seas during a two-month attachment with the Royal Navy as Sub-Lt Wales.

The assignment, which begins from June 2 and last until August 1, will see the 25-year-old spending much of his time trolling the West Indies aboard the HMS Iron Duke, a frigate on hurricane relief duty and counter-narcotics patrols.

The second-in-line to the throne will bunk-up with other young officers in a four-berth cabin and will be expected to play a full part in life at sea on one of his mother’s warships.

He will also serve aboard a nuclear-powered submarine and learn to fly aircraft from the Fleet Air Arm.

Rear-Admiral Robert Cooling, the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff, said that the Prince will receive the same treatment as other officers and while on Iron Duke, he would be expected to take part in armed boarding operations against suspected drug traffickers.

The admiral added that the Prince would play a full role on a Royal Navy warship on operations, which will include day and night watches on the bridge and learning about the ship’s weapons systems.

As an Army officer, Prince William will also be expected to join boarding parties.

“If this is an entirely permissive boarding or a drugs search, then by all means, why shouldn’t he,” the Telegraph quoted Rear-Adml Cooling, as saying.

The admiral also said that life aboard a warship was an austere existence which he expected the Prince to embrace fully.

“These warships are not like cruise liners. It is a pretty lumpy, very austere existence. He will bunk-up in a four-berth cabin which is not en suite, so he will be making his way up the passage way to use the heads [lavatories] in the same way that any other young officer does, he said.

“This is a robust young man who has taken military training in his stride so I am very confident that he will do fine. But we will be watching him very carefully. He doesn’t know, I suspect, whether he is susceptible to sea sickness. But if he is, we have a little pill to help,” he added. (ANI)
