Johannesburg/Harare, June 28 (DPA) Preparations were under way in Zimbabwe Saturday for the swearing-in of Robert Mugabe as president just a few hours after the controversial run-off vote in which he was the only candidate. Witnesses reported the erection of marquees in the grounds of the presidential palace.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said it will announce the result of the poll during the weekend.

Mugabe plans to attend the African Union summit due to start in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh Monday.

Observers think he will hold the swearing-in ceremony ahead of the summit.

Initial reports have said that there was a high number of spoiled ballots, especially in areas where the opposition is strong.
