Power supply restored in quake-hit Japan city
March 12th, 2011 - 2:10 pm ICT by IANSTokyo, March 12 (IANS) Electricity supply was restored Saturday morning in Sendai city, one of the worst to be affected by a massive earthquake that triggered a huge tsunami.
Sendai resident Christopher Craig told BBC: “Electrical power was restored this morning and the government has announced that some grocery stores will be opened to provide food and water.”
“Aftershocks hit regularly, with almost continuous tremors since the first quake, but nothing has approached the strength of the initial shock,” he said.
On Friday, an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale hit the country, spawning huge tsunami waves, some 10 metres high, that slammed northeastern Japan. An estimated 1,000 people have perished in the disaster.
Sendai city is in Miyagi prefecture that was the worst hit by the quake as well as tsunami.
Michael Tonge, a teacher from Sendai, told the British broadcaster: “Going to take a few days for things to get a bit better. Still experiencing strong aftershocks.”
Tonge said no trains were running “so many people stuck and sleeping rough in freezing conditions as had heavy snow storm just after quake when people running to go to evacuation points in parks”.
