Canberra, May 1 (ANI): Australia’s head of the Catholic Church, Cardinal George Pell, has said that Pope John Paul II might become a saint within five years.

“This is the penultimate stage; he’ll be declared blessed, there’ll be a pause - I don’t know three years, five years, some period of time, before he’s canonized. But he’s making pretty good time,” The Age quote Cardinal Pell, as saying.

On being asked if he was certain about his claims, Cardinal Pell replied: “I would say so, yes.”

He also said there was a widespread support for Pope John Paul’s sainthood in Australia and across the world.

His claims gathered support from others in the country, with reports saying that one of them attending the sermon on St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday morning said: “He (John Paul II) was very well respected and led the Catholic Church through some very unsteady times.”

“I think it’s right he become a saint eventually, this is really the first step towards that stage,” she added. (ANI)
