Facebook New York, May 18 (IANS) Furious over his girlfriend’s Facebook postings and fearing she might leave him soon, a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer has shot himself dead in front of the woman on a Manhattan street, police said.

Philip Chlanda, 29, said ‘I love you’ to the woman and shot himself dead Tuesday outside the Murray Hill apartment which they shared with his parents, NY Post quoted police as saying.

Chlanda, a four-year-veteran, was working on night shift.

“He was looking at Facebook to see if she was communicating with someone else,” said a police source. “It was an argument.”

During the confrontation inside his parents’ posh, third-floor apartment, Chlanda got upset when he thought his girlfriend intended to leave him, said sources.

He stormed out to the street with his lover giving chase.

As he approached his police cruiser, the shattered officer professed his love, pulled his 9mm service weapon from his holster, and pulled the trigger before the woman could stop him.

Chlanda and his girlfriend had met only a few months ago.

A gun enthusiast, Chlanda was a well-regarded marksman and a nationally-ranked long-rifle expert.
