Police detonate mail bomb outside Greece prison
April 1st, 2011 - 12:52 am ICT by IANSAthens, March 31 (IANS) Greek police Thursday detonated a mail bomb at the entrance of a maximum security prison in this capital city, a media report said.
Bomb experts conducted a controlled explosion of the padded envelope addressed to the governor of Korydallos prison, where alleged members of an armed anarchist group are on trial, Xinhua reported.
Authorities found the package suspicious after scanning it, police said.
No group claimed responsibility for the bomb, but police said the parcel had Italian stamps and an address in the neighbouring country.
Authorities were investigating whether the parcel was actually sent from Italy and whether there was any connection with other parcel bombs that hit Greece and Italy in late 2010.
Nine suspected members of the Revolutionary Nuclei of Fire group are on trial at a court set up inside Korydallos prison, for their alleged role in bombings.
The group has claimed responsibility for parcel bombings last November that targeted embassies and even reached the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
