Play Mozart to microbes to speed up sludge breakdown!
June 2nd, 2010 - 5:34 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, June 2 (ANI): A German sewage plant is playing Mozart to microbes to speed up waste breakdown.
According to the Markische Allgemeine newspaper, the plant is playing classics such as The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro around-the-clock, via a series of speakers designed to replicate the acoustics of a concert hall, reports News.com.au.
Bosses believe the composer’s music will help reduce energy costs at the waste-treatment facility in Treuenbrietzen, southwest of Berlin.
Scientists at German firm Mundus came up with the idea, saying microbes are particularly partial to harmonies and rhythms.
When coupled with large quantities of oxygen, the sonic patterns stimulate activity and speed up sludge breakdown.
Detlef Dalichow, the plant’s sewage manager, said: “If it means we can save 1,000 euros per month on sludge disposal, then it would definitely be worth it.” (ANI)
