New York, April 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has for sometime been protesting against the use of goldfish in bar racing. The protests seem to have paid off because some bars have dropped the race.

The fishes are pitched against each other in a race that takes place in 8-foot transparent containers. The goldfishes are tricked to race towards the other end of the tank using squirt guns, bottles and straws. The sport is one of the most popular in bars in Seattle.

In an interview with Seattle Weekly, an owner of a bar where the sport often takes place explained why he has to drop the sport. Pat Nagle explained that the sport was popular at the bar but following the series of protests that PETA sent, the bar had no option but to stop the sport.

Nagle said he was receiving as much as 70 emails every week from PETA. He said the bar tried to find an alternative to please PETA. When that seemed not to work, Nagle admitted that the sport had to be stopped at the bar.

PETA explained why they sent the protest letters. They indicated that they have received several reports of drunken people swallowing live fishes during the game.
