Dec 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) For Army private Russell Meyne, the morning of December 7, 1941 was just like any other day when he was eating breakfast at the mess hall of Pearl Harbor’s Hickam Air Base. However, just few moments later the army veteran and his fellow officials realized that things serene Sunday morning symbolized the calm before the storm as shortly later, the Japanese Imperial Army launched a vicious attack on the Hawaiian island which was all set to change the course of the Second World War. On the 69th anniversary of the vicious attack on Tuesday, Russell Meyne, now 91 years of age was among the dwindling number of other Pearl Harbor survivors who recalled the dreadful day.
Russell Meyne who holds the position of the treasurer of the South Carolina division of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, can still vividly remember how the events of the day unfolded. The Army veteran recalls that initially the gunfire were making their presence felt slowly but soon the bombing got really exciting. Russell Meyne clearly remembers the sight of few soldiers running to the airfield in an attempt to move some of the airplanes when they are completely smeared with machine guns.
Despite the fact that number of people survived the deadly attack on the Hawaiian island is decreasing as the years are passing by, for most of them the memory of the fateful continues to remain unforgettable. Every year, on the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association holds a national convention to remember those innocent lives that were lost in the vicious attack.
