‘PCB has hired cooks and drivers as security guards’April 23rd, 2009 - 8:04 pm ICT by IANS
Karachi, April 23 (IANS) In a stunning revelation, a local newspaper here claimed that the private security guards hired by the Pakistan cricket chiefs for Pakistan-Australia one-day series in United Arab Emirates (UAE) are only a bunch of car drivers and cooks.
According to Express - a mainstream Urdu daily - the 100 security guards hired by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bolster security arrangements for the April 22-May 7 series in UAE are not capable of handling any possible attack on the cricketers.
Quoting a story in an unnamed Dubai newspaper, the report said the cash-strapped PCB has wasted over a $100,000 on hiring the private bodyguards who are of no use because all the security for the series is being handled by the local police.
The report quoted Major General Mohammed Eid Al-Mansoori, director-general of the UAE’s protective security and emergency, as saying that the private security companies hired by the PCB do not have trained bodyguards. He said the guards are mostly engaged by local residents for private parties.
“Most of the private security companies hire guards who are cooks and drivers,” Al-Mansoori was quoted as saying.
“They lack proper training and are ill-equipped for the job when it comes to a high-profile event like the ongoing Pakistan-Australia series.”
Al-Mansoori was also quoted as saying that it is the UAE police who are handling all the security arrangements for the series.
The PCB had announced before the series that it hired around 100 private bodyguards as part of its comprehensive security plan for the series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The move was prompted by the last month’s terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore.
