Patrol frequency in Indian waters increased to thwart Somali pirates
March 19th, 2011 - 4:18 pm ICT by ANIPort Klang (Malaysia), Mar. 19 (ANI): Indian Coast Guard Deputy Inspector General S.D. Bhanot has said that the frequency of patrols have been increased to keep the Somali pirates at bay, thereby keeping Indian Coast Guard busy thwarting pirates off Indian waters.
The Indian coast guard ship Sankalp, under the command of Bhanot, was docked at port Klang to exchange the information pertaining to safeguard the waters of both India and Malaysia.
“Only a few days ago, we caught 61 Somali pirates. And a few months ago, another 40 were caught,” said Bhanot.
According to The Star, 61 pirates on a hijacked ship were captured in the Arabian Sea on March 13.
The International Maritime Bureau had cautioned that Somali pirates were attacking ships in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of India and Maldives.
Bhanot, who sailed on the Sankalp with 10 officers and 96 men, said he had met the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Malaysian marine police to exchange and share experiences on issues such as piracy and search and rescue.
He said that coordination between countries, and the exchange and sharing of information between national agencies is important to tackle the issue of piracy. (ANI)
