Parents give birth to twins - one ebony, the other ivory!
February 25th, 2011 - 5:56 pm ICT by ANIWashington, Feb 25 (ANI): An Ohio couple has given birth to twins but this is no ordinary pair, because one baby is white, and the other is black.
Triniti has ebony-coloured skin and all the classic dark features of an African American, but Gabe is ivory-white with steely blue eyes and blond hair.
“People ask, ‘How did it happen?’ Are you sure they are twins? We get a lot of stares, and I am sure people make comments behind my back,” ABC News quoted mother, Khristi Cunningham, as saying.
Their mother is white and their father, Charles Cunningham, is black.
“I don’t know how it happened. They are fraternal twins, so they aren’t any closer than if they had been born years apart. Ours just happen to have the same birthday,” Charles said.
While almost everyone is baffled, having a black and white twin is “no big deal from my viewpoint,” said Dr. Ronald Bachman, retired chief emeritus of the genetics department at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in California.
Bachman added that only a careful study of the placenta by the obstetrician or a DNA test can definitively determine if twins are monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal).
“An assortment of genes go into the egg and sperm to get skin colour. This family is no different. The twins are just like siblings in biracial families,” he added.
“No one gets to say if they are black or white. It’s not a choice and to me they are perfect and will grow up to be loved. There’s too much hate. People should be more worried about whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat,” said Charles. (ANI)
