Pakistani provincial panel for women criticised
September 17th, 2011 - 2:47 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Sep 17 (IANS) Women legislators in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly have criticised a provincial commission for women.
The legislators demanded that professional and dedicated women should be made part of the commission.
Muttahidda Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) lawmakers Zarqa Bibi and Uzma Khan sought immediate dissolution of the commission and claimed that the government had inducted its blue-eyed women in the panel.
“The commission is a one-woman show and has confined itself to meetings,” the daily Dawn quoted Zarqa Bibi as saying.
The commission was formed in May 2010 to work for women’s empowerment in the province.
Zarqa Bibi said the commission has failed to set up its district level committees.
Minister for Social Welfare Sitara Ayaz said the commission members were appointed on merit.
