Islamabad, Oct 10 (IANS) A former chief of the Pakistan Navy will head the country’s apex anti-corruption organisation.
President Asif Ali Zardari has named Admiral (retd) Agha Fasih Bokhari as chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The post had been lying vacant for several months.
Dawn said the NAB became dysfunctional July 20 on a Supreme Court order. The court said the body could not function in the absence of a chairman.
The National Accountability Bureau is Pakistan’s apex anti-corruption organization. It is charged with the responsibility of elimination of corruption through a holistic approach of awareness, prevention and enforcement.
The president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Zardari nominated Admiral Bokhari and contacted Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and opposition leader Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan for their opinion about the nomination.
The NAB chairman’s post has been vacant since the removal of Deedar Hussain Shah in March this year.
