Pakistan to help de-mining in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Oct 25 (IANS) Pakistan will help de-mine parts of Sri Lanka’s Northern province, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

A 10-member de-mining team from the Pakistani Army Engineering Corps is currently in the country for the purpose, a spokesman of the Pakistan embassy here said.

Sri Lanka wants to complete the demining operations in the north by the end of this year.

The National Steering Committee on Mine Action said recently that the Tamil Tiger rebels had laid over 1.4 million land-mines in the Kilinochchi district alone, situated in northern Sri Lanka.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were defeated by the security forces in May 2009, ending a nearly three-decades-long ethnic conflict in the island nation.
