Islamabad, Sep 20 (IANS) Pakistan needs to develop a national coordination mechanism for controlling epidemics like dengue, says Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
There has been a rise in dengue cases in Pakistan, with Punjab province reporting over 6,000 dengue patients.
Gilani was in Lahore Monday for the National Conference on Dengue Response.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said the prime minister has put in place a Coordination and Strategy Cell at the federal government level.
The cell would work for resource mobilisation and coordinate the efforts from federal government, provincial health departments and international partners, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.
Gilani also directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the information for prevention from dengue were disseminated through the huge workforce involved in polio eradication.
Awan said: “The incidence of terrorism has already confined the people to their houses, and now the dengue monster is frightening them, for which all segments of society must help the governments in pulling the people from this state of tension and trauma.”
