‘Pakistan must hand over terrorists for trial in India’December 10th, 2008 - 6:04 pm ICT by IANS
Jammu, Dec 10 (IANS) The terrorists arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of being involved in the Mumbai attacks must be handed over to India for trial in this country, a central minister said here Wednesday.”The mere detention or arrest of the terror masterminds in Pakistan would not help matters,” Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan said at a press conference.
“All these terrorists should be handed over to India. They would be tried in India under the Indian law,” added Chavan, who in the Congress party looks after the party’s affairs in Jammu and Kashmir and is here for the ongoing assembly elections in the state.
Pakistani security forces Sunday launched an operation against the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) that India has blamed for the Mumbai carnage, and arrested its commander Zakiur Rahman Lakhwi and at least 15 fighters of the group. An office of the Jamat-ud-Dawah, as the LeT was renamed after it was outlawed in 2002, was also sealed in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
On Monday, the authorities in Lahore placed restrictions on the movements of Maulana Masood Azhar, the head of the Jasish-e-Mohammad militant group that New Delhi says staged the Dec 13, 2001, attack on the Indian parliament building.
Saying that terrorism had hit India hard, Chavan admitted that whatever happened in Mumbai 26/11 was a result of intelligence lapses. “We also own the political responsibility for this failure,” he added.
At the same time, Chavan claimed that Congress victories in three states - Delhi, Rajasthan and Mizoram - proved that the people have unshakeable faith in the party’s leadership and policies.
