‘Pakistan cricket attack mastermind has escaped’March 10th, 2009 - 8:27 pm ICT by IANS
London, March 10 (IANS) The suspected mastermind of last week’s terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore has escaped a police raid on his home, a British newspaper reported Tuesday.
Mohammed Aqeel, a member of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), escaped Monday before the raid in his village in Khauta district, about 48 km from Islamabad, the Times reported quoting security sources.
The LeJ is said to have close links to Al Qaeda and has been active in Kashmir and Afghanistan.
One of the mastermind’s associates, identified only by the name of Talat, was arrested, the sources said, without giving any details about either of them.
The sources said they feared that the rest of the 12 gunmen who attacked the Sri Lankans’ convoy had fled to Pakistan’s northern tribal areas, from where Al Qaeda and Taliban militants operate, the newspaper added.
