Oz teen jailed for shouting ‘I am a penis’ has jail sentence reduced
March 31st, 2011 - 6:13 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Mar 31 (ANI): A teenager in Brisbane, Australia, who was jailed for seven days for walking through a busy inner city street chanting “I am a f****** penis”, has had his sentence reduced on appeal.
Michael Trevor Royce Collins, 18, was in Albert St on August 8 last year near family groups and children, when he was arrested by the police and taken to jail, the Courier Mail reported.
Collins was denied bail and when he then fronted the Magistrates Court the next day, he was jailed for two months, to be suspended after he served seven days actual custody.
Collins was granted bail pending his appeal to the District Court.
In an oral judgment earlier this year, Judge Nick Samios upheld Collins’s appeal, and sentenced him to a month’s jail wholly suspended but for an operational period of six months.
Judge Samios said a short sharp prison sentence, as a lesson was undesirable because it could expose Collins to the harmful aspects of prison. (ANI)
