Oz prisoner escapes as he ‘wanted to see his mum’
August 25th, 2010 - 6:31 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Aug 25 (ANI): A Queensland prisoner, who was being extradited to Melbourne over the killing of another man, is said to have escaped from the police, as he “wanted to see his mum”.
Wynnum man Kayd Craig Thorp, 24, was recaptured while drinking at the Manly Hotel six hours after escaping from police at the Brisbane Airport domestic terminal on August 24, the Courier Mail reported.
A Magistrates Court in Brisbane heard that the father of three eluded Victorian homicide detectives while two were checking in their baggage at the Airport terminal and a third was collecting luggage from the boot of their vehicle.
Thorp, who was not handcuffed, escaped into nearby bushland before swimming across a creek and catching a train into the city from Nudgee train station.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Matt Kahler said Thorp then caught a taxi to the Manly Hotel, as he wanted to see his mother before going into custody in Victoria.
The court heard 29 Queensland Police and 12 Australian Federal Police units searched for Thorp for six hours before officers, who had been looking for the fugitive at his mother’s home in Wynnum, noticed him drinking at the Manly Hotel.
He was returned to custody and pleaded guilty today to one count of escaping lawful custody.
Magistrate Paul Kluck sentenced him to six months jail with a parole release date of November 25. (ANI)
