Oz mum, daughter conquer Mount EverestMay 27th, 2008 - 4:10 pm ICT by admin
Melbourne, May 27 (ANI): Two women from Sydney have reached the top of Mount Everest, creating history as the first mother-daughter team to climb the world’s highest summit.
Cheryl Bart and daughter her 23-year-old daughter Nikki, reached the peak Saturday after setting out on April 1.
Speaking via a satellite phone from Katmandu, Cheryl Bart explained the incredible journey with her 23-year-old daughter Nikki.
“When we got to the top, the sun was just rising, coming up from Tibet, and there was just clouds and the mighty mountain tops underneath us which was just amazing,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Bart, as saying.
“I was just in awe. I couldn’t believe I was there, I just couldn’t believe it.
“It’s the most glorious and magnificent place on Earth, as well as being quite harsh and it’s quite a privilege to look at it,” she added.
The mother-daughter said that they did not initially plan to climb all seven summits, especially Mount Everest.
“I think the toughest bit was being away from family and friends for two months and living in tents. It’s a real honour but that (the record) is something other people are more excited about. We just wanted to make it up and down safely, Cheryl said.
“We wanted the challenge. To do something out of our comfort zone and to do it together,” she added.
Cheryl said that now they were just looking forward to reuniting with family and friends, enjoying a good meal and sleeping in their own beds.
The pair, who snacked on cheese and gummy bears for energy on the way up, decided to tackle Mount Everest after conquering the 8201m high Cho Oyu - the sixth highest mountain in the world.
Cheryl said that she and her daughter still couldnt believe what they had achieved.
“Right now it hasn’t really sunk in what we’ve done. We’re like the Forrest Gump of mountaineers,” she said. (ANI)
