Oz man booked for drink driving in stolen taxi
July 19th, 2010 - 6:25 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, July 19 (ANI): A man in Cooktown, Australia, is said to have stolen a taxi to get home while being four times over the legal blood alcohol limit.
The 21-year-old man, who was among the 25 drink-drivers charged in the Far North on the weekend, had allegedly stolen the taxi from Cooktown’s central business district on July 16.
The police allegedly found him at home where he recorded a blood alcohol level of .209 percent.
He has been charged with unlicensed driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and drink driving and will have to appear in front of the Cooktown Magistrates’ Court.
Cairns police district Insp Russell Rhodes said the number of people charged with drink driving was a concern for the police.
“These figures do demonstrate a blatant disregard in some sections of the community,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.
Insp Rhodes said police would refocus their efforts on catching drink-drivers and bringing them before the courts.
He also said there were many families that suffered as result of drink-driving offences.
“It is our duty to reduce such impact on the Cairns police district,” he added. (ANI)
