Oz hands over Indian-origin man’s body to his wife
April 25th, 2011 - 1:03 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Apr 25 (ANI): The dead body of Lakhwinder Singh, the Indian-origin man who was stabbed at Rushworth in Australia on Friday, has reportedly been returned to his wife in India.
Singh, a native of Rajpura city in Punjab, was stabbed to death in the Miners Pick Caravan Park in Rushworth.
A 37-year-old Springvale man, Thy Sok, has been charged with his murder and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week, the Age reports.
On Saturday, the Deputy High Commissioner of Australia to India, Lachlan Strahan, had called the killing of another Indian youth in Australia a “tragic incident”.
Diplomatic sources had claimed that Australian authorities had contacted Lakhwinder’s Indian wife.
“The victim was not a student. The consulate has been in contact with the victim’s relatives and is providing assistance with funeral and other arrangements,” sources said.
Violence against Indians in Australia has been a sensitive issue, especially after several racially motivated attacks on international students two years back had soured relations between the two nations.
Singh was known to Sok and there is no evidence the attack was racially motivated. (ANI)
