Oxford named top university for eighth consecutive yearJune 3rd, 2009 - 2:07 pm ICT by ANI
London, June 3 (ANI): The latest Times Good University Guide has named Oxford as Britain’s leading university for the eighth successive year, but there are big changes in individual subjects.According to The Times, Oxford maintained its lead over other British universities because of factors like better staffing levels, degree classifications and higher spending on student facilities.
Rival Cambridge had the better record on research. Cambridge also ranked first in 35 subjects, while Oxford achieved first place in nine, including some of the most prestigious subjects, such as medicine and economics. The leading institution changed in more than one third of the 62 subject tables. Only a dozen universities outside of Oxbridge lead any of the 62 tables and most are for subjects that are not offered by the two institutions.
Of the remaining universities, Loughborough holds the highest number of top places, heading the field in sports science, building, librarianship and information science. Bath, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Warwick all lead two of the subject tables.
Outside Oxbridge, Sheffield makes the top ten for the largest number of subjects with 27. (ANI)
