Over 960 inmates freed in DR Congo prison attack
September 8th, 2011 - 3:11 am ICT by IANSKinshasa, Sep 8 (IANS) Over 960 inmates were freed by unidentified gunmen in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) by attacking a prison Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
Two people were also killed and two injured in the attack.
The attack was carried out in the morning on a prison in Katanga province, located in the south of the DR Congo, freeing 967 inmates, Xinhua quoted a provincial government minister as saying.
Jean-Marie Dikanga Kazadi, the interior minister and the spokesman of the provincial government, said 50 of the escaped prisoners had been arrested so far.
The prison has 1,500 prisoners.
