March 25th, 2011 - 11:46 am ICT by ANITarlay (Myanmar), Mar 25 (ANI): A earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale struck northeastern Myanmar on Thursday night, resulting in death of over 25 people, with more damage reported on Friday. However, no tsunami was reported.
The quake struck along Myanmar’s borders with Thailand and Laos, about 110 kilometers from the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai. The city sustained a little damage, Thai television reported.
The 6.8-magnitude quake was just 10 kilometers deep, according to the US Geological Survey.
Following the deadly quake on Thursday night, six after-shocks have been reported in Myanmar’s northeastern Shan state, including Tachileik, Kengtung and Tarlay areas, until Friday morning, Xinhua quoted local residents, as saying.
Some houses in villages around Tachileik were damaged in the earthquake, which had killed two people and injured six others in the area, official report confirmed Friday.
So far, life in Tachileik and Kengtung are normal with no stop of electricity and water supply despite some damage to the residential houses.
Local Red Cross has started relief operation since Friday morning. (ANI)
