Abbottabad, May 5(ANI): Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden had reportedly banned smoking in his compound in Pakistan’s Abbottabad city in line with a Taliban ruling that says that smoking tobacco is “haram” or forbidden by Islam.
According to The Telegraph, shopkeepers where two of his close aides did the bin Laden family shopping said they regularly bought one or two single cigarettes and smoked them immediately because they could not smoke them in their compound.
Arshad Khan and his younger brother Tariq regularly visited shops a few hundred yards from their compound to buy eggs, salt, milk and sweets for up to seven children in the compound.
The two brothers are believed to have been killed along with bin Laden in the US raid on Sunday.
One of the shopkeepers, Mohammad Usman, said both brothers would often buy single cigarettes and smoke them outside his shop.
“They preferred not to take the cigarettes back to the compound, they finished them here and did not take the pack home,” Usman said.
Bin Laden, who had evaded capture for a decade, was killed in a top secret operation involving a small team of US Special Forces.
The Saudi-born terrorist, accused of being behind a number of atrocities, including the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, was at the top of the US “most wanted” list. (ANI)
