One killed in Sudan plane crash
November 12th, 2010 - 7:38 am ICT by IANSKhartoum, Nov 12 (IANS) One person was killed and five people were injured Thursday when a plane crashed in Sudan, officials said.
The accident took place at Zalinge airport in Sudan’s West Darfur state when the back tires of the aircraft exploded and it caught fire, Xinhua quoted an official at TARCO Air, owner of the civilian plane, as saying.
“One female passenger, Hawa Mohamed Abdalla, was killed and five others were injured. The condition of one injured passenger is serious,” he said.
The plane, Antinov 26, was carrying 38 people aboard including its crew members and four children in an internal flight between Geneina, capital of West Darfur state and Zalinge town, he added.
“Ninety percent of the passengers survived in addition to its crew members who are about six,” Abdul-Hafez Abdul-Rahim, spokesperson for Sudan’s Civil Aviation Authority, told Xinhua.
“According to the available information so far, around five to six passengers were killed and injured. We are following up with the concerned authorities in West Darfur the progress of the rescue operation to know the exact number of the killed and injured persons,” he said.
