One killed, 50 injured as train gas wagons explode in Italy
June 30th, 2009 - 7:32 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Viareggio (Italy), June 30 (DPA) At least one person was killed and 50 people were injured after two railway cars filled with gas exploded at a station in the Tuscan port city of Viareggio early Tuesday.
Fire officials said that the gas-filled wagons derailed and exploded shortly after midnight, and the flames spread rapidly engulfing a road near the station.
Some houses in the area were evacuated and two houses reportedly collapsed. Fire fighters were combing through the rubble for possible survivors.
Officials were still to determine the cause of the accident. They were investigating whether two freight trains had collided.
